According to the Law on Animal Welfare (“Official Gazette of RS”, No. 41/2009), scientific and research organizations that conduct experiments on animals are obliged to form an Ethics Committee for the protection of the welfare of experimental animals. The Ethics Committee of the Institute for Animal Husbandry was established in 2015 with the aim to:
1) determine the method of conducting experiments on animals, in accordance with the law;
2) perform professional control over the implementation of animal experiments;
3) organize the training of persons who conduct experiments on animals;
4) provide expert opinions to the minister on the ethical and scientific justification of conducting the experiment;
5) submit regular annual reports to the competent Ministry.
The Ethics Committee is obliged to immediately stop the implementation of experiments if, during the implementation of experiments on animals, it acts contrary to the provisions of the Law and to inform the Ministry about it.
